Dotcomslashblog

If you’re reading this, in a way you’re all set. I’m double-posting this from NDNL, but either you’ll already have abandoned that, like me, or you’re subscribed to the FeedBurner feed, in which case you might want to read on.

Here, in any case, is the post, for your consideration.

From now on, NDNL will no longer be updated. I’ve set up shop at nilsgeylen.com and the new blog there resides under the subfolder /blog

nilsgeylen.com/blog

Hence also the new blog’s tentative title: dotcomslashblog. The creativity!

Most functionality is in place; bear with me as I trod along trying to make things work and/or look good.

Should you update any feeds?

The short answer: yes, that would be best. Here it is.

The long answer: you certainly should if you’re subscribed to the wordpress.com feed

http://nodependenciesnologo.wordpress.com/feed

I’ll double-post for a while, but that feed will soon be phased out.

You could also switch if you’re subscribed to the FeedBurner feed

http://feeds.feedburner.com/ndnl

I’ve already redirected that one to syndicate content from the new domain, but it’d be stupid to stay with that. That one too may be deleted at a certain time. My apologies if one or the other pops up twice in your reader.

Then again: most people already ‘grab’ their stuff from ‘the cloud’ – getting their content here and there, from Twitter or Friendfeed – without sticking to silly outdated things like RSS.

And to think we were convinced we’d be able to keep up.

So, in any case, head on over to the new address and subscribe – if you like. Using your browser will subscribe you to

http://nilsgeylen.com/blog/feed

whereas using the feed icon will subscribe you to the new feedburner feed

http://feeds.feedburner.com/dotcomslashblog

If all that makes sense.

What should you expect?

Nothing – that always works out to your advantage. Let’s just say I intend to post more, but also ‘more seriously’. The terms ‘grown-up’ and ‘higher quality’ sprang to mind.

Incidentally, that is also why the blog is in a folder, not in the root: I tend to think that blogs are on their way out and the main domain will reflect that broader choice of new, more appropriate services and modes of communicating. But as it says on the home page, more about that soon.

If you don’t like serious, there’s also a stream and a tlog. The former self-hosted on Sweetcron, the latter still over at Tumblr – for now.

Oh, and a hat-tip to my mate Allen from Sustainable Hosting, who’s made this switch a cinch.

    Hey Nils,
Just popping by as I saw your swanky new photo on Facebook and realised that I hadn't visited for a while.

All change eh? All the way from Napfisk, to No Dependancies No Logo, to NDNL, and now this.

I've added your new feed and will try and comment a little more than I have recently.

  2. Smaran:

Congrats on the new blog! Self-hosted is the way to go. My blog was also hosted on wordpress.com till I moved it off.

No Dependencies No Logo used to be called Napfisk? I thought that was just your alias online.

Post more — it's good for you. Or at least that's what I read somewhere. Blogging helps relieve stress. I don't think the researchers who did that study realise it can also be a cause for stress for some of us.

  3. Adem:

Hmmm, maybe I'm getting old and confused Smaran, and probably meant that Napfisk changed into Nils sometime along the way….

*waking up* Anyway… yes, more posts are good!

  4. Smaran:

Ah. I doubt it has anything to do with your age. Nils isn't the only one that used to be known by another name. :)

  5. Nils Geylen:

Hey Adem, thanks for popping round. Yeah, lots of things happened along the way. I hope I won't disappoint you and try to share interesting stuff with you. Do comment, I see the new Disqus commenting system is doing its job well already.

  6. Nils Geylen:

Thank you, yes, self-hosting is the way. I'm preparing a post as we speak how self-hosting fits into cloud computing btw. So, yes, expect more posts soon. No stress. No stress dammit!

  7. Nils Geylen:

Indeed, Napfisk was an old nick. I switched to my real name and identity a while ago. Then came No Dependencies, NDNL and now this.

Yay for more posts. And more comments :)

  8. Nils Geylen:

Yeah, All Along the Watchtower, Smaran, Koregaonpark, Smaran.in… If anyone knows about multiple identities/online presences it must be you indeed ;)

  9. Smaran:

    Mustn't forget Simran. :P

  10. Tom:

Nils… I love your blog. Congrats on the move. If self-hosting means what I think it means, I agree with everyone who commented; it's the way to go.

Despite what you say though, I don't believe blogs will ever go out. Time will tell of course. How's about we make a deal to see which of us is right. Loser buys beer?

And what are these advanced buttons I see here “unclaimed” “register” “login DISQUS”. Why do you do this to us simpletons Nils?

  11. Nils Geylen:

Hi Tom, how kind of you. I hope I won't disappoint. Self-hosted means I have my own domain, and have installed the blogging software myself on a bit of server space I rent and pay for myself. A blog on Blogger or Wordpress.com is free, but hosted on the servers of those companies. It means you are limited in making modifications etc. Self-hosted also means that when things break, it's probably my fault and I have to fix it. That's not so nice.

Blogs will certainly be around, but their form will no doubt change – I'm convinced of that. But now it seems as if I want to get out of making that bet, so okay, deal: I say blogs are gone within two years ;)

Disqus is a service that makes for better commenting. One of the things you can see is the indenting and the threads: people can now reply to comments and track those responses more easily. All comments on this blog can also be found at http://dotcomslashblog.disqus.com/ and if you're registered (that's what the second button is for) you can track all the Disqus comments you made on other blogs that use the service (which is what the third button is for). Do read up on http://disqus.com if you like.

In any case, again, thanks for your comment and I hope this explains some. Cheers!

  12. Adem:

The DISQUS system looks quite good, although it did confuse me first as they are ordered in chronological order or the last comment on the thread, which is very different from bog standard commenting. This does make it easier to keep up with a comment thread instead of having to read through a whole comment section to find out what the new comment relates to…. phew…. that sentance got away from me a bit there, but at least I know what I'm talking about!

  13. Nils Geylen:

Exactly, and the fact that the threading is linked to your Disqus account also helps in tracking and subscribing to comments that you made on separate comment and threads and even different blogs.

    I think ;)

At least I know what you were saying.
