Camtasia Studio 6 Does Arrive, Surprises

Only two days ago I said there would be no new Camtasia Studio release. In reality, I’ve been playing around with the new version for that time and today 6 was in fact announced. First impression: it doesn’t look all that different. But also: it’s really fast and stable.

Version 6 doesn’t come with a huge amount of snazzy new features like 5 seemed to have. But what 6 lacks in appearance, it makes up for under the hood. Watch the videos on the TechSmith site or look at what struck me the past couple days.

+ features:

  • it’s a lot faster and more stable
  • audio 1 track can be unlocked from video
  • callout fades and transitions can be adjusted accurately
  • better, smarter hotkeys
  • support for both high def and iPhone as well as YouTube formats

- features:

  • can’t open older projects without converting and backing up
  • still no real templates or project settings you can save
  • no new players, transitions or a lot of other visuals
  • where has FLV support gone?

In general this upgrade won’t convince you if you were looking for lots of new creative solutions (still no Mac version either), but for those of us who use Studio daily, it looks like 6 is a must have.

The $150 upgrade seems a tad steep, especially considering the previous version was released not that long ago.

Overall: better, faster editing but less fancy effects (except for the tilt which is cool).

Thanks to Betsy Weber who sent me a trial version before the official release
